Personal authority or power tripping?

Hey Guys,

I received a very good question today regarding personal authority. What’s the difference between personal authority and playing power games to see who gets the upper hand in a relationship?

On a separate subject, where is the boundary between personal authority and power games? And, how do I build a relationship with personal authority but without power struggle (which is not a good use of our energy)?

JA: Now, this is a very good question, and a mistake men make a lot. Power games are forcing women to do things they really don’t want to do by using pressure tactics, lying, etc. Men who do this usually have very weak self images, and don’t know how to lead.

Personal authority is taking responsibility for both of your outcomes, and leading her to where she wants to go.

Power struggles usually occur when you’ve met someone whose desired goals and outcomes are not consistent with yours. This is a qualification issue, not an authority issue. Before you get into a relationship, you must be sure both of you are on the same page, else there will be a power struggle.

If you both have the same desired outcomes, there will be no power struggle. You take the lead within the relationship, make the decisions and accept the consequences without using petty power-game tactics, and she will follow. Not only that, she will respect you—and that’s not the case when you use power games techniques.
