Over the weekend I went to see the move Public Enemies, with Johnny Depp and Christian Bale. I’ve always kind of liked Depp—he’s good at playing eccentric characters, and doesn’t try to be what he isn’t.

But Christian Bale drives me nuts. He’s the ultimate phony, the guy who tries to look tough, but inside is made of marshmallow cream. The girlie men in the media fawn over him, but he’s no tough guy and no action hero.

He’s a joke as batman (Michael Keaton was better than him) and a complete loser in the latest terminator movie—to go from Arnold to him is to go from the penthouse to the outhouse.

But that’s what society has come to in this day and age. All image, all the time. Men trying to be what they’re not. Softness disguised as toughness.

If you go back to the tough guys of yesteryear, men like Clint Eastwood or Frank Sinatra, you’ll see a very different sort of man. These guys were hard. Really hard. Many of them had military experience, and they all grew up in the war years. They all worked for their success.

If you get a chance, watch a movie on TCM with one of these old time tough guys, then watch one with the new marshmallow version. The differences are striking. You’ll know how NOT to act as a man.

Here’s a huge secret to attraction in this day and age: never pretend to be someone you’re not. Way too many guys do this, and it’s a huge turn-off to women. You don’t have to be an old time tough guy—but you want to avoid being a poser at all costs.

Depp is no true tough guy, but he never pretends to be. Bale is the worst kind of imitator. Better to be like Depp, than like Bale.
