The feminine mystique

Hey Guys,

Way back when I was in college at the University of Texas, I suffered through a history class taught by a woman who was, quite frankly, a communist.

Now, I love history, especially during the 20th Century, and I’m here to tell you this woman was clueless.  She spent her time griping about how Nixon was a warmonger, how she couldn’t believe the Eastern Europeans were throwing off the yoke of communism, and how everything to do with the military was bad, ‘um kay.

What if everything you ever thought you knew about dating and relationships was just plain wrong?  Would you keep doing the same things and getting the same results?  Or would you try something new and radically different?  To stop dating, and

The whole thing was actually rather amusing, and a good lesson in what most college professors are all about.  After all, she could say anything she wanted with no consequences whatsoever… so she did.

The final book she sentenced us to read was the worst one, or at least that’s what I thought when she gave it to us—The Feminine Mystique, by Betty Friedan.  It’s the book that launched the feminist movement, and quite frankly I thought it was going to be nothing more than a man-hating ran.

But, I needed to keep my grades up, so I started reading the darn thing, and you know what?  It was a pretty damn good book.  Looking back on it now, it’s not a book about “feminism” per se, it’s a book about opportunity, achievement, and accomplishment.

In other words, it’s a self development book, and one EVERY man should read, especially if you want to have a lasting relationship.

In the book she talks about “the problem that has no name,” the feeling of dissatisfaction every woman in the US was feeling when she wrote it.  The culture at the time (social programming) dictated that if women were to get married as fast as possible, have lots of kids, and be a housewife, they’d be ecstatically happy.

But most weren’t.  Most were just plain miserable, and they didn’t know why—but Friedan did.  She knew the “problem that had no name” was lack of opportunity to achieve, to create, to excel, to experience something new each day instead of the day in and day out rinse, wash, and repeat drudgery that greeted each housewife.

All she wanted was to change the culture from one of forced boredom to one of choice of opportunity, so the minds of these women would be constantly engaged.

Fellas, listen ye to Betty Friedan.  If you’re in a relationship with a woman, you’d better do all you can to foster the environment where her mind stays engaged, and she has the opportunity to taste both achievement and failure.

The last thing any woman wants is to be bored, and you’d better make it a point to make sure she’s not each and every day.  Else the problem that has no name, will suddenly have one:  breakup.

So, man up, fetch your copy of The Feminine Mystique, and read it cover to cover… you’ll be amazed at how so many “feminists” want to spend time with you afterwards.

On with the fun…
