They listen to what the women they’re talking to are saying, and are genuinely interested. They have no expectations of anything “happening,” and aren’t worried about their “next move.”

They are in, and enjoying, the moment, secure in themselves and in their ability to socialize in a way that engages others minds. They are witty and interesting, and those around them gravitate towards them. They don’t seek to impress, but often wind up doing so as a byproduct of their unique style.

When women are around a man like that, they can’t help but be attracted. It’s so different from most men they run into, men with agendas, weak self esteem, and expectations of “taking them home.”

The thing about Halloween that’s so relevant to attraction is it’s the time for everyone to let their inhibitions out in a safe and accepted environment.

For example, if you go to 4th street in downtown Austin tonight, you’ll see the biggest lingerie show in the country. Why? Because it’s a safe opportunity for women to display their naughty side, something they rarely get to do in public.

On Halloween it’s socially acceptable to dress like this, and instead of being criticized for it, they’re complimented. Not only that, it lowers the level of inhibition—women are more likely to act on their displays of naughtiness on Halloween more so than any other time (don’t mistake this with a woman being “easy”).

So, tonight’s the night to go out, have a great time, and let out your inhibitions. And who knows, you might just attract a woman you never would under any other circumstance, and turn that into something lasting.

Although I detest the title of the show “American Greed,” I very much enjoying watching it.  It gets inside the minds of both the con men and the marks, and reveals some very interesting things about human nature.

Why, for example, do supposedly smart (and very rich) people give their money to a “financial genius” like Bernie Madoff with no questions asked whatsoever?

The answer is simple:  because they want to believe what he is saying.  They want to believe it so much they’ll suspend the responsibility of thinking and buy into the excitement.

It happens in every con, no matter the income level, no matter the person’s experience, and no matter their intelligence.  Their desire to believe the promise made completely clouds all common sense.  In fact, the outcome of it NOT being true is so disappointing, they’ll fork over their money in order to avoid disappointment.

Take, for example, a “con” that’s run in the attraction business.  I’m on a lot of mailing lists, and I get a lot of letter from Nigeria, ostensibly from young, bored women.

In fact, these women are so bored, they took the time out to write me, confess their feelings to me (I must have a hell of an international reputation because they’ve all apparently fallen in love with me), and tell me how they can’t wait to meet me.

Not only that, they’ve also taken the trouble to enclose very revealing pictures of themselves—and all of them are in their mid 20’s.  Furthermore, all of them are white or Hispanic (with the excuse they are in Nigeria as part of a mission), and looking for a man like me.

How do they know me so well?  Why they saw my name on a label and fell in love with it.  Guess I’m sexy, based on name alone.

On further reading, they need just one little thing in order for us to start our new, happy life together (beginning, apparently, as soon as I meet them at the airport). And what would that one little thing be?

Why CASH, of course!  Money.  Fungolas.  Dollar-inos.  And please, no checks, credit cards, or money orders—just cash.  As much as I can spare.

Obviously, the whole thing is just a gimmick to get money.  But what’s amusing to me is, how many times I get that letter.  What that means is, it’s working—direct mail is NOT cheap, even if it’s from Nigeria. They would not send out that letter unless they got money in return.

And why do they get money in return?  Because a lot of men WANT to believe the story, and do NOT want to be disappointed by the truth. So, they send their money in, hoping a hot, young, 25 year old nurse will arrive at the airport to spend the rest of her life with him.

Fat chance.

The lesson here is this:  when you find yourself desperately wanting to believe something, stop and check it out.  Thoroughly.  It may turn out to be on the up and up.  But it may also be a con or a scam.  And if you fall for one of those, it’s the ultimate disappointment—and embarrassment.

Good Morning Mr. Alanis,

I liked your spot on incongruency this morning.  So often we are not aware of our surroundings.  As I read your article, I thought about different times when I had seen good-looking men in the same scenario + wondered if their mothers had taught them how to dress properly, or if they were simply taking a break that day.  In either event, one can’t be sure, and as I often am in a situation where I NEED a man to know how to dress(+ act socially), I was deterred from practicing my sexy eyes look across the room.

That being said, I now need to play the devil’s advocate–it’s my specialty.  Is the same true for being dressed up?  Obviously, we’re not talking tuxedos at McDonald’s, but what about being slightly overdressed?  Does it work things in reverse?

As a female professional, I don’t generally have the luxury of putting on more than one set of clothes daily.  Often times, I will find myself out in the evening dressed much nicer than my company(maybe this is a sign that I need to start frequenting more upscale places?), but rarely feel out of place as the woman who’s being watched because she’s dressed better than the competition.  Maybe it is different with men?

JA:  Thanks for the email, Andrea—always good to hear from the ladies on my list.  And yes, I think you bring up a good point—being slightly overdressed CAN be a turn-off.

Here’s why:  if a man is overdressed for a particular environment, it looks like he’s trying too hard.  And when it looks like he’s trying too hard, he comes across as desperate—and that’s an attraction killer.

The same thing applies to outrageous dress—it looks like he’s trying to hard, or he only comes across as a buffoon, worthy at most of fun in the moment. 

So, the thing to do is to dress simply for the occasion in clothes you personally feel comfortable with.  That shows you’re calm, cool, and collected, and have a sense of style without having to show off to anyone.  And that is an attractive thing to women!

Thinking before you speak, however, is not just some common-sense thing.  It’s actually a higher level of communication because it forces you to evaluate the impact of what you’re about to say on the interaction you’re currently having.

Most men don’t do this.  They simply pay attention to the conversation in their own heads, saying whatever feels or sounds good at the time with no regards to how it will impact the interaction.

Furthermore, when you make it a point to think before you act, it forces you to have a desired outcome in mind—after all, if you don’t, you can’t evaluate the impact of what you’re about to say.

When you do this, oftentimes you’ll change what you’re about to say.  You’ll recognize it as potentially harmful, or you’ll come up with something better at the last second that will be more effective in getting you the outcome you want.

When you get good at this, you’ll have two mental processes running at once—the lower level talking process, and the higher level evaluation process. It will give you a decided advantage over lesser men, and dramatically increase your chances of getting your desired result with the woman you’re talking to.

The successful man always communicates with a purpose.  But to do so, you have to be able to evaluate the impact of what you’re about to say in order to get to your purpose.

So, don’t just think before you act—think before you speak, and do so automatically.  You’ll be surprised at how quickly success follows.
