John – I follow your advice with great interest, so I wanted your opinion on how to maintain a relationship.  I’m sure I’m not the only man who has this problem, but I often have to work alot and I have to stay focused on my job.  There are stetches where I have to heavily concentrate on something job related.  During these times, I either don’t have the time or the energy to devote to keeping the attraction going all the time with a woman.  But those are the times when I need support and understanding from a woman, knowing that she understands why I can’t be the fun attractive guy all the time and is there to support me through these rough times.  It almost seems like as a guy, I have to do all the work with keeping the fires burning with a woman to maintain our relationship, but this is something that’s unrealistic because of everyday pressures and responsibilities.

I’ve read that many male soldiers returning from year-long tours of duty in Iraq or Afghanistan come home and discover that their wife/fiance/girlfriend has been cheating on them and that divorce rates among military families has been increasing.  Why don’t the women stand beside their partners and support them?  I’m not talking about all women, of course, but how can a guy be solely responsible for keeping a relationship going when he has other demands and responsibilities that don’t allow him to be the fun and authoritative guy all the time?

JA:  Thanks for the email, Jay.  The truth is, we may not like the biological rules, but we have to live by them. Many, many women DO stand besides their partners, but certainly some do not, and for a variety of reasons.

In your case, it comes down to initial selection.  One of your criteria is that the woman in your life understands you’ll be gone for periods of time, and is OK with that.  Some women are.  Some aren’t.  You’ve got to find one that is.

That being said, the most important gift you can give a woman is that which is most limited to you, and in your case, that’s your time.  What you need to do is actively set aside blocks of time where it’s you and her, with no interruptions.  It may be less time than other men have, but what’s important to her is you acknowledging she IS special by giving her the thing that is most precious to you.  When a woman knows you do this, she’ll generally stand by you.

In the end, however, what women want is a man who takes responsibility for, and leads in, the relationship.  It’s just how the world works.  What you have to do is figure out how to make it work for your circumstances.

But in the end, they want to meet and be with one woman, not many.  Unfortunately, that’s not what happens with most men.

You see, it’s not just a matter of meeting that special one, then letting magic happen.  I wish it was that way, I really do.  But that’s the domain of fairy tales and romance novels, not reality.

You can meet that special one, but if you don’t make her feel attraction in a way that makes her want to be with you long term, she’ll walk out of your life.

So, here’s a big secret:  if you’re a man who wants to meet a woman for a long term relationship, you have to do more than just master attractive behavior.  You also have to develop and show her the personality that leads to that kind of relationship.

You have to naughty, funny, and playful.  But at the same time, you must be stable, passionate, and responsible. You have to make her feel chemistry.  At the same time she must feel protection and security with you.

Many men don’t understand this.  They think attraction is enough.  And for fun, it is.  But if you want a lasting relationship, you have to add the parts of your personality that lend themselves to that.

Else you’ll just be a guy dating lots of women who are special only to other men.

Now, how often do people live happily every after in real life?  Not very.  Why?  Because they think once they get to the end of the fairy tale, that’s it and happily ever after just happens.

Well, it doesn’t.  It can happen, but you have to make it happen.  You have to create and design your life in order to live happily ever after, and at times that means making the hard call.

Happily ever after does NOT mean you are constantly happy.  That’s ridiculous.  That’s not reality.  Happily ever after means actively creating the circumstances that will lend themselves to the highest probability of happiness, and avoiding those that lead to circumstances that can create discord.

Sometimes the woman in your life will ask you to do something she really wants, but you know is detrimental.  Or she’ll do something you know is not healthy, but she thinks is right.  When that happens, you have to make the hard call and confront her about it, even if it means you both feel unhappy for a brief period of time.

If you don’t make the hard call, things will linger. Things will get worse. And that will lead to unhappiness in the long run, not happily ever after.

So, yes, you can have happily ever after.  But the price is temporary discomfort, initiated by you.

When it comes to attraction, that’s an important thing to keep in mind.  You see, what makes a woman want to be with a man are her emotions.  And the right words, said at the right time can stir great emotions in women.

That’s why you have to be careful, have to be aware of what you say.  If you’re not, then you can wind up hurting a woman deeply because she thought you made her promises you had no intention of keeping.

If you’re a rock and roll guy, just out to have a good time, there plenty of women out there interested in the same thing.  And you don’t have to tell them all kinds of deep meaningful things to have a good time.  You just have to make them feel a bit of attraction.

Too many guys, however, don’t understand this.  They’re desperate, and they’ll say and do anything to get a woman to like them, or be with them, or sleep with them even when they know they’re incapable of living up to their promises.

What happens is, they wind up hurting a great woman, and she walks away, bitter about men and the lies they tell.  The sad thing is, she may have been perfectly willing to just keep it fun, but opened up when she heard the right words at the right time, and wound up getting hurt.

So, be careful what you tell a woman.  Be careful with your words.  First do no harm, as they say in medicine.  And if it does get to the point where you’re ready for more, ready to make her feel like no other man has, you’ll have the ability to do so.  But don’t do it until you’re ready.

But, friendship (true friendship) DOES have a place in relationships, especially long term ones.  In fact, if you closely examine the ones that last, you’ll see both people are really good friends in addition to everything else.

In fact, friendship pretty much determines whether or not a relationship will stand the test of time.   You see, when you’re friends with a woman, you genuinely like her in addition to being attracted to her.

You want to see her, you want to spend time with her because it’s a lot of fun.  You have the same interests, the same likes and the same dislikes.  You understand each other because you are friends.

But a lot of relationships are formed where there is no friendship.  There’s white hot passion at the beginning, but when that wears off (and it always does) there’s nothing left.  Oftentimes you find out you really don’t like that person very much.

So, if you’re going to have a long term, lasting relationship, make sure she’s good “friend material” in addition to everything else.  That’s what will make it stand the test of time… and in this case, being a friend is a very good thing.
